Pick me up Review

October 5th, 2008

I’ve finished Pick Me Up by Zoe Rice recently. I started on this one because it had a good review from Sophie Kinsella, who is one of my favorite chic-lit authors. I really enjoyed reading about Izzy, who’s a down-to-earth person, an art dealer and a charming, awesome character. This was a pretty fast read for me because it wasn’t very thick and its really fun reading the pick-up lines on the beginning of each chapter. Even though it was kinda predictable in the end who Izzy Duncan would end up with, it was still really sweet reading on how Grady and her relationship blossomed.
You should really pick this one up.

Breaking Dawn Review

August 13th, 2008

I’m done reading Breaking Dawn, the last book of the Twilight saga. I know there’s still Midnight sun but its just a parallel run of the series from Edward’s point of view… so the saga has somewhat completed. – or so I choose to believe -

Twilight tempted my imagination…
New Moon made me thirstier for more…
Eclipse turned the saga into a worldwide phenomenon…
And as for Breaking Dawn lets just say… its a different story all together.

I am going to start rambling here. I was pretty engrossed with how the story took place but to me, its ending wasn’t satisfying enough. It just seemed as though Stephenie Meyer changed her writing perspective. I’m still confident that I absolutely love Twilight and New Moon and Eclipse… but its pretty obvious things had turned towards a more mature point of view after Eclipse. I know that its not a bad thing… but the ending of Breaking Dawn seemed kinda anti-climatic. Up till now, I still don’t fancy the whole idea of Jacob imprinting on Renesmee. I did feel deeply for the Edward-Bella-Jacob love triangle they had going on in the previous books and I had hoped that it would have settled in a way where either Jacob would let Edward ‘win’, or vice versa… for the sake of Bella’s happiness. I mean, isn’t that the whole point of having Team Edward and Team Jacob?

Jacob imprinting on Renesmee sorta twisted the whole story in a weird and disturbing way. I also can’t believe the former object of love Bella and Jacob held for each other just went *Poof! like that.

During the starting few chapters, I had the idea that the author would find some way of avoiding Bella’s transformation, to let her hold on to her humanity. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to see Bella turn into a vampire. And thank goodness she did! I also love how Stephenie Meyer portrayed Bella’s close to death encounter and how Edward’s pain was almost unbearable when he realizes she was dying. Its how she writes about emotional stuff like that that make you really feel as though you are in that person’s position. How much Bella meant to Edward. How much he didn’t want to lose her. Then… there’s Isle Esme. I loved everything about that island! Their love for each other was so perfect… until… Bella had to get pregnant. O’well… I mean these things do happen… I just didn’t imagine her taking on a more motherly role. When I was more than half-way though the books, I had the idea that Edward and Bella would ’somehow’ die in the end, to save everyone, to ensure their daughter had the option to live… And honestly, I am disappointed it ended in an agreement. And you know what? Don’t make me go on about the name Renesmee Carlie Cullen… or even Nessie… apparently named after, ROFL… the Loch ness monster!

- Loch ness monster -
‘a large aquatic animal supposed to resemble a serpent or plesiosaur of Loch Ness in Scotland’

I have to hand it to Jacob. Bella’s reaction totally cracked me up!!! At least I kinda grew to like the name Renesmee because I can imagine her being so absolutely cute and adorable. Anyway, the Twilight saga has been a pleasure reading and I am glad that Edward and Bella did have their happy ending after all. Breaking Dawn though was ‘just alright’ for me because it didn’t really meet my expectations. I can’t believe I’m saying this but this book did make me see a little more in-dept about the beauty of marriage and giving birth. After such an unexpected ending for Breaking Dawn, my mind is set that the series had ended with Eclipse.
